Since 2016 we have worked with the school system of Tamil Nadu to pilot the curriculum using the school system’s trainers to train teachers and to monitor schools. As of December 2017 the intervention has reached hundreds of classrooms in over 40 schools. Handwashing rates are about 50% (and much higher when soap and water are present). We hope to raise rates further over the next few months.
We are also working with the Engagement Lab @ Emerson College in Tamil Nadu on a version of the curriculum using the popular cartoon character Chhota Bheem and his friends.
In the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand we are working with Educate Girls Globally. In schools with their Girls' Parliaments they have introduced handwashing with soap. While the sample is small (25 schools), results are very promising. Importantly, the students run the intervention, so it is less of a burden on teachers. EGG is working with 2 large districts so hopes to reach hundreds of thousands of students in a few years.
In the 2018-19 school year Tamil Nadu will introduce elements of our materials in its curriculum for 37,000 government schools. (The state of Tamil Nadu has more people than France.) We continue to work closely with the school system to ensure schools have soap and to increase the health content throughout all grades.
